DE HISPANIC COMMISSION LAUNCHES STATEWIDE HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC STUDY

The Delaware Hispanic Commission is sponsoring a statewide cultural and linguistic study to better understand the needs of our diverse community and better leverage services to promote health equity. Delaware continues to become an increasingly multicultural state. In 2015, the Hispanic population represented 9.2 percent of the population and is expected to increase in the next 10 years by 35 percent. To promote health and social services more effectively, we need to understand all of the needs of the diverse populations we serve.

The purpose of this study is to learn more about current programs and practices in order to improve the level of services to Delaware residents who are Limited English Proficient (LEP). The study will involve multiple health service organizations this month. The Commission is working in partnership with CulturaLink, LLC, a firm specializing in cultural and linguistic services in health care. The study includes:

• Quantitative data - an anonymous health provider web survey for front-line staff to determine how the services are currently delivered to diverse consumers.

• Qualitative data - focus groups/community dialogues with consumers and patients on their perceptions of current programs and opportunities for improvement.
